Juniors

The next generation.

Squads five days a week at Changlimithang, a Monthly Junior Series to compete in, and a pathway that now runs all the way to an international draw. Nu. 500 a month, and everything here starts with a first lesson.

01 — Where the programme is right now

Bhutanese juniors are no longer only playing each other.

Two years ago a Bhutanese junior's whole season was a handful of matches in Thimphu. This year our players have competed at the 1st Bhutan Junior Tennis Championship, run a Monthly Junior Series at the National Training Centre, sent a team to the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championships in Phnom Penh, and carried the flag at the Billie Jean King Cup Juniors.

Squads train at Changlimithang Monday to Friday, grouped by age and standard: an advanced squad that runs before school at half past six and again in the evening, and a beginner and intermediate group three afternoons a week for anyone starting out. School outreach brings racquets to children who have never held one.

The programme is open to children from outside Bhutan too. Seven of the juniors training at Changlimithang right now are the sons and daughters of expatriate families working in Thimphu. No residency test, no waiting list — if your child wants to play, bring them down.

It is a small programme. It is also, right now, the fastest-moving thing in Bhutanese sport.
